The Apartment, San Sebastian

San Sebastian

San Sebastian is on the North coast of Spain, about 20km from the French border. A city of about 200,000 people, it is described in The Rough Guide to Spain as:

‘The undisputed queen of the Basque resorts… a picturesque seaside town with good beaches… it has always been the most fashionable place to escape the heat of the southern summers… Set around the deep, still bay of La Concha and enclosed by its rolling hills, it is beautifully situated: the old town sits on the eastern promontory, its back to the wooded slopes of Monte Urgull, while newer development has spread along the banks of the Urumea, around the edge of the bay to the foot of Monte Igeldo and on the hills overlooking the bay’.

There is much to do and see in the city, including churches and art galleries, a stunning array of shops, not to mention the Real Sociedad football stadium and walks up onto the promontories for views of the whole bay. There are spectacular drives along the coast, with many nice villages and towns to stop at on the way, and also within easy reach is the city of Bilbao, renowned for the new Guggenheim Museum and Norman Foster Metro.

San Sebastian is very easy to get to. Bilbao and Biarritz airports are about one hour away by coach or taxi and San Sebastian is on the A8 autopista, which runs along the North coast of Spain into France and connects to the ferry port of Santander. There are regular trains from Madrid, taking about four hours, and trains every other hour from Paris to Biarritz or Hendaye/Irun on the French/Spanish border from where you can get a connecting service.
